Crunching the numbers (or minutes)

One county government in the Northwestern United States set about the arduous process of analyzing their cellular/wireless costs.  Even though the bulk of their subscriptions were with the same carrier, they had several accounts and therefore several bills each month, making an aggregate analysis tedious.  Given this agency's long-standing relationship with Matsch Systems, they thought Matsch could help.  They were right.

Over the course of 3 months, a complete analysis was done so that an accurate picture of the patterns of usage (data, voice, SMS) could be determined.  Working with the wireless carrier to get help with this kind of analysis was time-consuming, not to mention confusing.  Add to that the fact that the county government was looking to reduce their expenditures with the carrier - not something a sales representative for a wireless carrier wants to hear!

Matsch's Cellular Management System helped them cut through the massive amounts of billing and usage data to highlight opportunities for cost savings.  Matsch's ability to boil down the data into meaningful information helped the county make the necessary changes to their plans, resulting in significant savings.

What we found:
• Some subscriptions not taking advantage of low contract prices through the Western States Contracting Alliance.
• Actual usage of peak minutes was less than half of what was purchased/paid for
• By their own calculations, the county was able to identify $3700 worth of savings on 111 phones, bringing their total annual savings to $44,000.
• Cost per phone before changes: $40.50
• Cost per phone after changing plans: $30.11
